Beyond Conversation: Meaningful Connection Through Presence

Serena Lin

They may not speak, but they’re still present. Non-verbal doesn’t mean non-communicative. Here’s how to maintain deep connection without relying on words.

Reading Non-Verbal Communication:

Positive Engagement Signs:
✓ Eye contact (even brief)
✓ Leaning forward
✓ Relaxed face/body
✓ Reaching toward objects
✓ Vocalizations (humming, sounds)
✓ Mirroring your movements

Stress/Discomfort Signs:
❌ Turning away
❌ Closed eyes persistently
❌ Tense body
❌ Pushing away
❌ Agitated movements
❌ Facial grimacing

Non-Verbal Connection Activities:

Visual
• Photo albums (high contrast)
• Color choosing (point to preferences)
• Watching birds/nature videos

Tactile

• Texture exploration box
• Soft fabric squares
• Stress balls or putty

Musical
• Familiar songs playing
• Rhythm instruments
• Humming together
• Music videos from their era

Movement
• Gentle chair exercises
• Balloon batting
• Sorting soft objects
• Folding washcloths

The PRESENCE Protocol:

Position yourself at eye level
Respect their space
Engage one sense at a time
Speak softly, narrating actions
Expect nothing specific
Notice micro-responses
Celebrate any engagement
End when they indicate

Creating Communication Bridges:

  1. Yes/No questions with visual cues
  2. Choice-making with objects
  3. Comfort positioning
  4. Predictable routines
  5. Patience with response time

Your Words Still Matter: Even if they can’t respond verbally, hearing familiar voices activates memory centers. Narrate what you’re doing, share memories, express love.
